Explaining the Entropy Excess in Clusters and Groups of Galaxies without Additional Heating

چکیده

The X-ray luminosity and temperature of clusters and groups of galaxies do not scale in a self-similar manner. This has often been interpreted as a sign that the intracluster medium has been substantially heated by non-gravitational sources. In this paper, we propose a simple model which, instead, uses the properties of galaxy formation to explain the available observations. Drawing on available observations, we show that there is evidence that the efficiency of galaxy formation was higher in groups than in clusters. If confirmed, this would deplete the low-entropy gas in groups, increase their central entropy and decrease their X-ray luminosity. A simple, empirical, hydrostatic model appears to match both the luminosity-temperature relation of clusters and properties of their internal structure as well. Reexamination of the Galaxy Formation-Regulated Gas Evolution Model in Groups and Clusters

As an alternative explanation of the entropy excess and the steepening of the X-ray luminosity-temperature relation in groups and clusters, the galaxy formation-regulated gas evolution (GG) model proposed recently by Bryan makes an attempt to incorporate the formation of galaxies into the evolution of gas without additional heating by nongravitational processes. This seems to provide a unified ...

The Evolution of X–ray Clusters and the Entropy of the Intra Cluster Medium

The thermodynamics of the diffuse, X-ray emitting gas in clusters of galaxies is determined by gravitational processes associated with shock heating, adiabatic compression, and non–gravitational processes such as heating by SNe, stellar winds, activity in the central galactic nucleus, and radiative cooling. The effect of gravitational processes on the thermodynamics of the Intra Cluster Medium ...

The Heating of the ICM: Energy Crisis and viable solutions

X–ray observations indicate that non–gravitational processes play a key role in the thermodynamics of the Intra Cluster Medium (ICM). The effect of non–gravitational processes is imprinted in the ICM as an entropy minimum, whose effects are visible in the Luminosity– Temperature relation and in the Entropy–Temperature relation. However, the X–ray emission alone cannot discriminate between diffe...

Entropy “floor” and Effervescent Heating of Intracluster Gas

Recent X-ray observations of clusters of galaxies have shown that the entropy of the intracluster medium (ICM), even at radii as large as half the virial radius, is higher than that expected from gravitational processes alone. This is thought to be the result of nongravitational processes influencing the physical state of the ICM. In this paper, we investigate whether heating by a central AGN c...

Agn Heating and Dissipative Processes in Galaxy Clusters

Recent X-ray observations reveal growing evidence for heating by active galactic nuclei (AGN) in clusters and groups of galaxies. AGN outflows play a crucial role in explaining the riddle of cooling flows and the entropy problem in clusters. Here we study the effect of AGN on the intra-cluster medium in a cosmological simulation using the adaptive mesh refinement FLASH code. We pay particular a...
